Abstract

In this paper the author uses bamboo slip characters from the State of Ch'u discovered in Pao-shan to discuss certain questions in the study of Chinese characters. (1) She analyses a large number of characters of different shapes (or styles), and discusses the phenomenon of "differently shaped characters" in that period.  In addition to attempting to rely on discernible rules to explain that characters took on many different shapes, the author also establishes that there were in fact rules of considerable strictness that affected the shape of characters. (2) The author enumerates certain stylistic characteristics of Ch'u calligraphy and discusses character shapes that were unique to the Ch'u region during the Warring States period. (3) Based on the li-i shih-tsu style, the author reexamines certain questions regarding the li-shu (clerical) style, and concludes that bamboo slip characters from the State of Ch'u played an important role in the development of the li-shu style.
