摘要

「輕重」原義是貨幣，由於五穀也具有交易功能，故廣義的輕重亦包括之。操縱貨幣和糧食以謀取財富的手段謂之「輕重術」，從事這種作業的人古書稱為「輕重家」。本文認為輕重是戰國社會經濟史非常重要的課題，輕重術是當時最主要的經商手段，輕重家是當時最有勢力的商人。
關於戰國的輕重商人目前尚缺乏足夠的直接資料，《越絕書》和《管子》的輕重說雖然都從政府立場立言，但它們都以民間商人為其打擊對象，籌謀對策，故亦可據以檢討輕重商人。本文五章除序與結語外，第二章「范蠡計然與商賈輕重術」，分析〈計倪內經〉、〈枕中〉、〈貨殖列傳〉以至《史記‧天官書》和《淮南子‧天文訓》的歲星占年法，建構其由簡單到複雜的發展過程，作者以為歲星占年之術在范蠡時已具基本規模，到白圭而大抵完備。商人利用星占知識，預測年成，買賣物品，以謀厚利。第三章「《管子‧輕重》的理論與政策」，討論今存十六篇所述壟斷物資的理論。輕重家主張政府挾其政治威權和政令的方便，利用市場經濟物多則賤、物少則貴的原理，調節五穀和貨幣的進出，政府便可以壟斷萬物與財貨。《越絕書》尚有政府平糴物價的用意，《輕重》諸篇直把政府變成壟斷的大商人。
戰國前期輕重商人買賣的物資以農作衣食產品為大宗，中期以下加入鹽鐵，本文第四章乃論這兩種新時代的致富企業。本文根據文獻和考古資料說明鹽鐵之進入歷史舞台，再從山林川澤利用的傳統闡述鹽鐵的經營自始即官私並存。最後敘述《管子》鹽鐵附加稅的主張，與桑弘羊國營的意見截然不同。
不論衣食農產品或鹽鐵，都是齊民的民生必需物質，故輕重商人所取都是編戶齊民之利，他們既擁有絕大財富，變成社會豪強，役使平民，是集權政府主要的打擊對象。
