摘要

摧鋒軍創於紹興五年（1135）年底，迄於景炎三年（1278），為南宋成軍最早、持續最久的地方軍隊。這支軍隊是南宋政府面對北方強敵金、蒙的長期威脅下，為因應嶺南地區的治安與勘亂，在禁、廂、鄉、蕃等正常軍事體制外，另成立一支介於中央軍與地方武力之間的軍隊──地方軍，來應付環境的變化、維護地方治安、鞏固政權而設置的。
南宋政府是應用二元的指揮體系來控制地方軍。摧鋒軍名義上隸屬中央的殿前司，地方政府則實際節制軍隊及支應費用；軍隊成員雖來自地方，政府卻透過擴大駐地及利用定期更戍等手段，達成兼具訓練與控制的效果。這一體制，既不違背祖宗家法，又能兼顧現實環境的需求，是南宋政權發展的一個有利因素，也是觀察南宋政權性格一個重要角度。
本文除前言、結論外，分成五節討論。第二節「摧鋒軍的創置與早期活動」，探討軍隊的創立者韓京的發展事蹟、摧鋒軍創立背景及早期活動狀況，以掌握建軍背景及初期情況。第三節是就蒐集到的零散資料，由組織與財務情況，分析摧鋒軍建立以後各方面的變化。第四節則以實際參與敉平亂事的事例，說明摧鋒軍的戰績。第五節從端平二年（1235）變亂的例子，反映軍隊本身的困境，第六節以參與抗禦外侮及元軍滅宋的過程，說明最後階段摧鋒軍抗元的努力。
從摧鋒軍發展始末，看出南宋政權在應付變局時，對舊制度所做的修正。不過，從制度的設計與事實的發展看來，宋廷隱然仍受祖宗家法的影響。
