摘要

本文旨在探討明末清初士人道德意識的呈現與轉化，而以人譜、省過會等修身冊籍及團體組織為例來說明。由於明代中晚期思想界是以王陽明學為主流，故本文所論亦以與王學直接或間接相關者為主。
本文首先說明，即使在最樂觀的人性論下，仍可存在著極強的道德緊張，明代的王陽明學也不例外。本來，遷善改過便是陽明格物說的一個主要部份，到了明季，隨著社會風俗之敗壞，在部份王學信徒中，省過改過便成為一個很熱烈的論題。
但由於陽明的「心即理」學說假設；在省過、改過的過程中，人們一己之心不但要作為被控訴者，同時也是反省者與控訴者。在陽明看來，這對良知時刻呈露作主的上根之人來說，並不成問題。可是上根者畢竟太少，而中、下根器者太多。故當王學廣行，而又產生許多「非復名教所能羈絡」的信徒後，人們逐漸認為：「心」同時作為一個被控訴者和控訴者，殆如狂人自醫其狂；故有一部份人轉而主張：在省過改過時，應該有第三者扮演客觀的監督、控訴角色，因而有省過會之類組織產生。而此一現象亦同時象徵著在道德實踐中「心即理」學說所面臨的理論危機。
