摘要

戰國大約有二百六十年，在西元前400年以前的早期階段，由於取代傳統封建貴族而建立郡縣政權的統治者尚能體人民，而且國際衝突甚少，規模也不大，人民獲得某種程度的休養生息，社會尚稱安定。但自400年以後，國際戰爭帶來的災難困厄，終於使六國以小農為主體的編戶齊民破產。本文將此二百六十年劃分作早、中、晚三期，西元前400年以前的早期與以後的中、晚期，有顯著的安定與戰亂的區別。題目所謂的「殘破」即特指中、晚期而言。
論人民生活之困厄和殘破，最好根據生產與消費資料作具體分析，但求之於戰國時代當然奢望。本文乃就能激勵民心士氣的制度，戰爭的破壞與隨戰爭而來的賦役和聚歛三方面，嘗試了解六國齊民小農的困境。我們發現六國缺乏秦國那套軍功授爵的等爵制，這恐怕是六國齊民不如秦人奮勵的制度性因素。第二，從戰爭動員的兵力及後勤補給，觀察史籍殘存的傷亡記錄，參照時人所論戰爭的阻礙生產和破壞經濟，以說明山東地區受害最烈、打擊最甚者，是既耕且戰的齊民小農。最後再討論在無窮之賦役和聚歛下，齊民小農所遭受的政治性與經濟性的雙重負擔。本文從這三方面說明山東地區編戶齊民的破產，也可以說是六國敗亡的社會史解釋。最後附論秦朝之滅亡乃蹈六國覆轍，不知使民休息之故。
還有兩篇拙作與本文相關，一是〈從爵制論商鞅變法所形成的社會〉，討論秦國的軍功爵，可以比較秦與六國編戶齊民身分制度之差異；一是未刊稿《羨不足論》，說明齊民小農遭受富商蓄賈的經濟剝削。這些角度對於了解戰國時代山東地區的編戶齊民都有助益。
