摘要

春秋時代，文字的功能由純粹記錄語言，逐漸進展到兼具有裝飾與美化的作用，特別是一些莊重典雅場合所用的文字，其藝術氣息十分濃厚，這是研究中國文字發展史上一個值得重視的課題。戰國以來，美術字體的發展日益成熟，不僅使用的範圍擴大，各類美術字體也紛紛定型。雖然美術字體種類繁多，然而各體所具有的共通性、規律性，正是當時這種字體所以能廣被接受，又普遍盛行的重要原因。
本文首先列舉實例，討論美術字體的類別、特徵、規律及流行地域等問題，並利用上述觀念對一些古文字（如石經古文、字書所見古文），提出新的解釋。其次，探討美術字體發展概況及對後來書體所產生的影響等問題，重新檢討「秦書八體」、「六體八技」中鳥蟲書與繆篆的各家說法，肯定戰國美術字體實為鳥蟲書、繆篆書體的濫觴，強調戰國文字在中國文字發展過程中承先啟後的重要地位。
