摘要

戰國秦漢之際人們認為霜害是足以傾覆家邦，妨礙政治教化，剝奪人民幸福的自然災害。霜害、無霜期與農業生產的關係十分密切。本文由文獻的爬梳著手，力圖就古人對霜及其與農業的關係的認識，勾勒出一個比較清皙的輪廓來。古人認為霜是由露凝結而成，並且由天空降落到大地上。古代雖然沒有“生長期”這一語詞，但肯定已具備了這個概念。大致上由春至秋就是多數植物的生長期，而霜的出現就是生長期的結束。越靠南邊，生長期越長，霜的出現時間越晚；而越往北，生長期越短，終霜日越往後推遲。
古人知道雖有凝霜，未必殺得死植物，大豆就有較強的耐霜本領；而有時雖然未見白霜，作物仍遭凍死。歷史上出現的霜害以早霜為多。長久以來人們通過星象、雷鳴、白雁南飛、蕎麥開花等現象來預測霜期的開始，人們也掌握了霜期內成霜和不成霜的氣象特徵，發展出了熏煙、覆蓋、包紮等有效的霜害防治方法。最遲自戰國以來，人們已有意識地對作物成熟的早晚遲速不同的品種進行考量、配合無霜期的長短來播種，發展出了多穫制。漢代的一些經營地主更培育出了早熟的糧食作物品種，並藉此來進行複種而走上了增產致富的道路。
