摘要

本文的問題有二，一是從歷史的角度考察吳越錢氏在歸宋後的遭遇。趙翼《廿二史□記》以「宋初降王子弟布滿中外」來稱讚宋帝的仁德，但傳說中，南漢劉鋹、吳越錢俶、南唐李煜、甚至後周的柴氏孤兒，均死得不明不白。除了個人的存亡外，家族的盛衰無寧更為重要。本文指出，錢氏在太宗一朝幾乎淪落破蕩，幸賴真宗的登場和時代的改變，家族的命運始得扭轉，終於由衰而盛。
在這掙扎的過程中，產生了本文的另一個問題，就是社會史上的階層流動。錢俶和平納土，直系親屬加官晉爵，一開始就處於上層，他們的問題是如何避免下降。較疏遠的族人，入宋時只有低微的官職或平民的身份，屬於下層，他們的問題是如何爬昇。處於中層的族屬，則同時面臨著或升或降的問題。本文指出，科舉和恩蔭只能帶動和維持下─中層次的流動，而必須藉婚姻和其他策略來進行高層次的攀升，後者如文武雙軌發展、內廷當差、和進入清要之途，這樣所形成的人際網絡實有「新門閥政治」之嫌，亦即高層次的權力仍由少數人長期在幕前或幕後所瓜分，並非如中、下層的開放和流移。
