There are indeed many different types of folk songs in China. Works of Chinese opera and Kunqu, however, were not included in these books as these two have already gained prominence and are now widely performed on stage. These two books collected roughly more than 6,000 titles of folk songs, mostly from the collections of the Palace of Prince Che, Peking Library, National Palace Museum and the Institute of History and Philology. The songs originated from 10 different Chinese provinces, with Peking, Jiangsu and Canton being the top three. The books were named “a sketch” as the authors believe that their collection is far from complete and awaits future amendments.
