The posthumous manuscript Liangchengzhen 兩城鎮 by Liu Yao 劉燿 (also known as Yin Da 尹達) has at last been published as Number Five in the Archaeologia Sinica series. Nearly ninety years have elapsed since the excavations conducted by the Institute of History and Philology in 1936 at Liangchengzhen, Rizhao County, Shandong. The process of organizing and compiling the Liangchengzhen materials was fraught with difficulties. When Liu Yao left the Institute of History and Philology, he was unable to complete the excavation report, and both the original field records and manuscript texts were incomplete. Subsequent wartime upheavals and several times of relocation resulted in the dispersal of excavated artifacts and documentation between Nanjing and Taiwan, making further progress in compilation extremely difficult. Moreover, the Institute lacked specialists focusing on the Shandong Longshan culture, and for many years the work remained limited to the basic collation and cross-checking of texts, illustrations, and artifact data.
In 1997, Director Tu Cheng-sheng of the Institute of History and Philology visited the Nanjing Museum, where he reached an agreement with Vice Director Xu Huping. As a result, in 1998 the Institute dispatched researchers and staff to photograph the Liangchengzhen artifacts housed in the Nanjing Museum. In 2017, the Institute invited Luan Fengshi, Director of the Oriental Archaeology Research Center at Shandong University, to visit. Professor Luan has long specialized in the study of Shandong Longshan culture and has participated in archaeological surveys and excavations at Liangchengzhen with multinational research teams from the United States, Japan, and elsewhere. With his help, the Liangchengzhen materials were finally brought into proper scholarly order, making possible the completion and publication of this volume.
The contents of this volume comprise: (1) the Liangchengzhen site and its excavations; (2) the stratigraphic deposits at Liangchengzhen; (3) architectural remains from the Longshan cultural occupation; (4) pottery from the Longshan cultural site; (5) stone and bone implements from the Longshan cultural site; (6) burials of the Longshan culture; (7) remains of later cultural phases; and (8) the characteristics of Longshan culture at Liangchengzhen.
