童永昌的研究興趣以中期中國 (Middle Period China) 的宋代政治、制度與文化為主，目前聚焦於訊息流動與帝國各階層運作的關係。他在台灣大學完成學士與碩士學位後，於哈佛大學東亞語言與文明系取得博士學位。他的研究一方面以政府檔案為重心，分析訊息流動制度的理想與實踐，並進而觀察宋代國家從十至十三世紀面臨的挑戰。另一方面則透過士人的各類日常文獻，由嚴肅的經典評論到笑話集，討論書寫與出版對建立知識菁英身分認同與文化價值的作用。他的研究亦觸及士人社會的情感、社會關係與歷史書寫。他未來的研究將以此為基礎，擴充時間與空間的跨度，進而思考訊息在東亞歷史世界的意義。
