Introduction

Cite

This volume contains 11 sets of rubbings in Yi scripts (cuan wen).  Except one which was brought back by Tan Xi-tao from western Sichuan, all the others were collected by the editor himself from Yunan and Guizhou.  The Yi population is dispersed throughout all these three provinces, and in total there are more than 770 characters listed in this volume.  “Cuan” was originally a popular last name in the region, and starting from around the Tang dynasty, the word was then used in Chinese to refer to this particular ethnic group in general.
