The Dongba Classics of the Nakhi Peoples is a full-text translation and annotation of ten volumes of the Dongba classics, presenting the texts in the following manner: the original, phonetic notations, translation of pictographic symbols, translation of sentences and contents, and annotations. The contents can largely be categorized into eight topics or themes: rituals to propitiate spirits, including the establishment of altars, food offerings, and the igniting of oil lamps; the “jifeng rites,” namely the “migration of youth,” which were also used to appease certain spirits; rituals of burning incense pillars to worship the heavens; stories on the origins and migrations of humanity; the eighteenth layer of the heaven where it is believed the gods dwell; longevity rituals, including the establishment of “baita” (lit. white pagoda or stupa); rituals of seeing off the gods; and finally, narratives on the origins of Dongba Shiluo, the first ancestor and founder of the Dongba religion. Finally, an introduction and the background to the rituals therein precedes the full-text translation of each classic. (Special Collections of Historical Materials No. 6)
