Gabriel Prieto, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida, has been invited to visit the IHP from November 14 to 22 and will hold a lecture on the afternoon of November 17 titled “Ritual Violence in the Chimu Empire: Human Sacrifice and Sanctified Violence as a Strategy of Political Control”.
Dr. Prieto’s research focuses on maritime adaptations and social changes among ancient fishing communities on the North Coast of Peru, exploring continuities and discontinuities in their cultural practices over 3,500 years. He also directs a multidisciplinary research team investigating how ancient societies deployed ritualized violence in response to climatic crises such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation.
