This book focuses on three main areas. First, it investigates the period between the tenth and twelfth centuries, when the Song dynasty, amid competition among the Liao, Jin, and Xia, had to respond with rational and practical diplomacy, establishing relationships with the Liao and Jin on a relatively equal footing.
