Introduction
2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Institute of History and Philology (IHP), Academia Sinica. In celebration of the occasion, this compilation is a meticulous selection of important documents and notable scholarly correspondence from the IHP’s archival collections. In this way, we hope to not only commemorate our predecessors but also gain insight into the essence of history.
Structurally, this book comprises four sections: important events, scholarly letters, the ups and downs of academic life, and photographic records. As to its contents, it is a treasure trove of 90 documents and 31 photographs of archaeological excavations and ethnographic fieldwork from before 1949; it also concludes a history and timeline of the IHP before 1949 as well as a directory of research fellows.
