This book analyzes how Anyang interacted with other regions during the Shang dynasty. Besides the studies carried out at Anyang, this book also looks at archeological artifacts from the peripheral regions, so to provide the readers a full picture of the Yinxu culture. Placing “periphery” ahead of “center” in the title of the book, we hope the readers to break away from the Anyang-centric mindset, and instead reconsider the relationship between the peripheries and the center. This book collects in total 13 papers, with their topics ranging from theoretical discussion, general overview and archeology in the region to specific study on the unearthed artifacts and the systems in the Shang dynasty.
