IHP Corresponding Research Fellow and Academia Sinica Academician Hsu Cho-yun is awarded the 2024 Tang Prize in Sinology for his exceptional contributions to the field of Sinology.
Dr. Hsu’s research broadly centers on the history of ancient China and socio-economic history of China, and more specifically on three discourses which form his so-called “three matrixes of Chinese culture”: a Huaxia consciousness among kinship groups explored in his monograph Western Chou Civilization, social and political bureaucratic systems in his Qiu gu bian (Discovering Antiquity), and intensive farming practices and market economies analyzed in Han Agriculture. Dr. Hsu’s unique insights into the period of the Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties have realized a certain level of "historical knowledge," contributing to a comprehensive interpretation of the early history of China and profoundly influencing both Eastern and Western academic circles.
The Tang Prize was established in December 2012. It consists of four award categories: Sustainable Development, Biopharmaceutical Science, Sinology, and Rule of Law. The prizes are awarded every two years by a committee comprised of distinguished experts, including Nobel laureates, to encourage professionals in their respective fields to influence and make substantive contributions to the world.
