Alice Yao, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at The University of Chicago, will visit the IHP from July 9 to 11. She will give a lecture on the morning of July 10 titled “Beyond Heavy Metal: Revisiting the Bronze Age Economics of the Tin and Copper Belt of Zomia.” Prof. Yao’s recent research explores the effects of the Han Empire’s conquest of the frontier largely through archaeological perspectives centered on southwest China, as well as expounding the ways in which different communities and social strata responded to the significant historical changes taking place in their respective locales. In addition to several well-regarded monographs, her new book, Archaeology of Han Empire, published by Cambridge University Press, is set to be released in fall 2024.
