我主要的研究興趣在於討論史前西南太平洋Lapita 社群如何透過陶器製作與交換行為，融合來自不同族群的新移民，建構並強化各島之本土社群意識。我提出「Lapita 社群很可能是以家屋社會的運作原則來規範其陶器生產與交易等行為」的假說來理解史前Lapita 人群的社經網絡與互動關係，並透過陶器器形、紋飾、岩相切片及化學組成分析等不同方式，來研究史前Lapita 陶器的製作地點和傳播路線，找出前人未見之陶器流傳模式，提出對Lapita 社群在各地所形成的社會網絡的模型假設。我也透過與多國學者合作，建立了全世界擁有最多Lapita 陶器資料的太平洋史前Lapita 陶器線上數位資料庫，建立分類標準，經由大範圍資料蒐集與對比，來檢視此一假說的可能性。現已確認出不同島群上的史前Lapita 社群，在創作與運用特殊裝飾紋路方面確有顯著的差別。
