Tenure-Track Research Fellow Position in Environmental Archaeology Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica

1. Area(s) of Specialization:

The Institute of History and Philology (IHP) invites applications for 1–2 tenure-track positions in Environmental Archaeology. We seek innovative scholars exploring the complex interactions between human societies and their environments. Applicants possessing methodological expertise in areas such as Archaeobotany, Zooarchaeology, Bioarchaeology, Geoarchaeology, Landscape Archaeology, or Paleoclimatology/Climate Change are highly encouraged to apply. This position emphasizes a holistic approach: the successful candidate is expected to integrate laboratory-based science with robust, primary fieldwork practices.

Preferences will be given to candidates with:

(1) Regional Expertise & Adaptability: A primary research focus on Taiwan, followed by Southeast Asia and Oceania. We also welcome exceptional methodological specialists who can demonstrate a robust framework for applying their expertise to these regional contexts.

(2) Field Proficiency: A proven track record of field investigation and excavation.

(3) Ethical Engagement: Demonstrated experience or a commitment to collaborative research with Indigenous peoples or descendant communities.

2. Rank:

Assistant Research Fellow (position roughly correspond to assistant professor at the university level in the United States)

3. Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree degree recognized by Taiwan Ministry of Education. Candidates who expect to receive their Ph.D. diploma by October 31, 2026, are also eligible to apply.

4. Required Documents:

(1) Application form: Download and fill out the form found below listed under “Download”.

(2) Complete CV and list of academic publications

(3) Photocopy of PhD diploma (applicants who have yet to receive their diploma may submit a copy of their successful dissertation defense or an official approval issued and dated by their advisor)

(4) Research statement or plan (2–3 pages): This should detail how the applicant intends to apply their environmental archaeology expertise to materials from Taiwan, Southeast Asia, or Oceania, including concepts for interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.

(5) Description or related information of archaeological fieldwork experience: Documentation of past projects, leadership roles, sampling strategy designs, and practical experience interacting with local communities (if applicable).

(6) Key representative works within the past five years (one copy of each)

a. Up to three publications (if a PhD dissertation is to be used, please provide it in its entirety; and for works written in languages other than Chinese or English, please provide an abstract thereof in either Chinese or English [3,000+ characters or rough equivalent in words])

b. Representative works other than a PhD dissertation should be peer-reviewed; for works awaiting to be published, applicants should provide proof of acceptance as well as documentation stating that said work has passed a peer-review process.

c. For co-authored works, fill out the Collaborative Academic Publication—Statement of the Distribution of Contributions (多人合著之學術論著__個人工作內容及貢獻說明書) form

(7) Two letters of recommendation: hard copies signed and mailed to the IHP Secretariat by the recommenders

5. Deadline: May 15, 2026 (must be postmarked in Taiwan by the deadline date)
