%X 這本特刊，是為紀念歷史語言研究所傅故所長孟真先生五十六歲的誕辰而輯。歷史語言研究所自1928年春籌備之初，即由他負責主持，直到1950年12月逝世。他主張要把歷史語言學和自然科學一樣看待，用新的工具，新的材料，研究新的問題。多年來，中國歷史語言學所以能樹立一個相當基礎，他領導研究的力量實在不小。

本刊內容，只講傅先生對學術的貢獻，作者多是所內同仁，所以更偏重他在歷史語言方面的貢獻。至於純學術性的紀念論文集，則待日後編刊。
